Your Summer Body Detox Menu

Summer is here and its time for a summer detox to get your body feeling great. Help your body clear waste, remove excess fluids and beat the heat by incorporating some delicious, detoxing foods into your summer diet. Here are some tips to get you started.
Fresh fruits and produce should be the basis of any body detox program. Fresh fruits are full of antioxidants and natural vitamin water to keep you feeling fresh and light. Antioxidants are known to help the body fight cancers so you get that extra natural immune boost, too.

Fresh vegetables contain natural minerals and other compounds to help you get your nutritional boost without all the extra calories. Celery is one of the best to beat the heat with. It is an all around body detoxifier that is high in Vitamin C and a compound called phthalides, which research shows helps lower blood pressure and even reduces stress hormones. The natural balance of sodium and potassium also help regulate fluid balance and stimulate urine production, which helps your body eliminate excess fluids.
Speaking of sodium, avoid table salt and high sodium processed foods during your summer body detox. Unfortunately, most of our dietary salt comes not from healthy, balanced sources such as celery, but from processed foods because it is a cheap preservative as well as an appetite stimulate. And salt addiction is a real phenomenon that can drain energy, promote fat storage and increase unhealthy food cravings.

Fortunately, your taste buds adjust fairly quickly. After only a week or so of limiting table salt and processed foods, you will be surprised at how salty many foods are. By eating a healthy detox diet based on just the two above principles, more produce and less processed foods, you will be on your way to feeling your best this summer. Here is a summer body detox menu outline to get you started.
Start your day with fresh fruit like berries, which are abundant and sweet in the summer time. Have an organic yogurt along with it to help balance digestion and throw in some unsalted nuts for protein.

For lunch, a hot summer day almost seems to require a fresh, crisp salad made with plenty of greens, fresh shredded carrots, sliced radishes, cucumbers and sprouts. Have this with fresh, grilled chicken or turkey. To cook your poultry, experiment with a variety of fresh herbs and olive oil as a marinade. Use a dressing made with olive oil and flavorful apple cider vinegar (Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar is one of the tastier brands found in your local health food store). If you are feeling experimental, try blending a cucumber, 1/2 avocado and a date or two with lemon juice as your salad dressing.
For dinner, choose from a variety of proteins, vegetables and low sodium grains. Try broiled skewers of lean beef or chicken using a low-sodium, organic marinade and onions, red and yellow bell peppers and tomatoes. Another choice might be broiled halibut marinated in lemon juice topped with fresh chopped tomatoes, onions and cilantro. Have a variety of fresh grilled or steamed asparagus on the side and 1/3 cup of brown Basmati rice.

For those extremely hot days or when feeling exceptionally fatigued, try drinking some energy. An excellent body detox drink can be made with a home juicer. Add plenty of celery, cucumber, kale, green apple apple, and add about 1/4 inch of ginger root for flavor. This combination will provide plenty of energy, nutrition and help your summer body detox. You may even find your skin clear after a week or so.
Keep your body health and fit with regular intervals of body and colon cleansing and detoxification. When done for shorter periods, from two to four weeks, your body will respond better and you may find it easier to follow. And of course, if you take medications, always check with your doctor before any diet changes.

11 Tips To Enjoy Summer Life And Still Keep Your Shape

Summer is about to be in full swing, and it's that time when everyone wants to look impressive in their "lack" of clothing.  While I can't promise you that you'll achieve a fitness model body, I can at least give you some simple but important tips in  achieving a leaner physique. Listen up! Behavioral changes guarantee your success - not just knowledge alone.

You may already have drawn out your road map with your nutritional plan and your workouts, so take that strategy and ACT on it. Stay motivated and consistently remind yourself of your fitness goal. Here are 11 basic tips to get you jumpstarted!
1. CUT THE SIMPLE CARBS.
It's unfortunate that the majority of society is a "carb junkie." This especially applies to overweight individuals mainly because their bodies struggle with insulin sensitivity. Our body absolutely needs carbohydrates, but one has to learn to appropriately reverse the ratio of simple carbs (high glycemic) to complex carbs (low glycemic). Most importantly reducing total sugar intake. Having a positive ratio of complex to simple carbs will allow the body to regulate blood sugar levels, burn more fat as fuel, and ultimately lose more weight.
2. EAT SMALLER, MORE FREQUENT MEALS.
Smaller, frequent feedings about every 3-4 hours prevents your blood sugar levels from spiking dramatically throughout the day. This helps your hormones stay in check, while regulating hunger as well. Ultimately, it helps elevate metabolism, it's easier on your digestive system, and it can eventually provide you with more energy throughout the day.

3. CONSUME MORE FUNCTIONAL FATS.
Essential fatty acids, such as omega-6 and omega-3 consumed in appropriate ratios of 2:1 or better yet at 1:1 will allow the body to regulate your hormones, calm down inflammation, and stabilize blood sugar levels. This eventually leads to greater fat loss. So suck it up, and buy your fish and flax oils at your local health food store.
4. DOWN THAT WATER.
Water is often overlooked, but it's the number one nutrient for our body to survive. Staying hydrated aids with digestion, curbs your appetite, and flushes our metabolic waste. Make sure to get in at least 64 oz per day.

5. INCREASE FIBER INTAKE.
This nutrient keeps food moving along your gastrointestinal tract, and like water, it aids in flushing metabolic waste. It also helps maintain consistent energy levels, slows the rate of carbohydrate digestion, which stabilizes blood sugar levels.
6. ABSTAIN FROM ALCOHOL.
Not only is alcohol estrogenic (negatively affects testosterone for men), can lead to fat gain, and has a whopping nutrition-empty 7 calories per gram, but it takes precedence over fat metabolism when introduced into the body. Alcohol actually shuts down the fat burning mechanism for up to 48 hours, so avoid it as much as possible.
7. SPICY METABOLISM.
Incorporating a variety of spices in your foods such as curry, cayenne pepper, cinnamon and certain herbs may help boost your metabolism. Spices also help with stabilizing blood sugar levels.

8. COMBINE WEIGHT TRAINING WITH YOUR CARDIO.
While aerobic activity may burn a great deal of calories, especially when maintained at a high intensity, you'll achieve greater success by combining it with resistance training. This is because proper resistance training stresses all of your muscles fiber types (Type 1 and Type 2). When you stress your muscles effectively, you either maintain and strengthen your current muscle mass or you even gain some. For every pound of muscle you gain it equates to 50 extra calories you can burn per day. So remember to hit the weights at least three times per week along with your cardio.
9. SLOW DOWN YOUR EATING.
No one truly gets to sit down and have a nice relaxing meal nowadays, especially with our busy schedules. Learning and realizing to slow down the pace at which we eat prevents compulsive overeating and assists our digestion. It takes at least 20 minutes between the time you're full and when your brain actually realizes it. Slowing your eating will also allow you to enjoy your meal.

10. WATCH FOR FOOD ALLERGIES.
Many people are allergic to dairy and wheat products. Being sensitive to these two food categories have been shown to cause weight gain. If you're consuming a diet high in refined foods, these sensitivities become more evident. This causes digestive problems such as bloating, stomach pain, and water retention. If you're not sure you may want to consider an allergy test.
11. GET YOUR ANTIOXIDANTS.
Getting your daily dose of antioxidants from either a good multi-vitamin, a specific antioxidant supplement combination, or even a healthy combination of fruits and vegetables is important for combating toxins held in fat cells. Antioxidants such as vitamins A, C, E, polyphenols in green tea, etc. help your body reduce the time that toxins stay in your system.

So there it is - 11 basic tips to help you achieve a healthier and leaner physique. It's never to late to take action. Have
fun and enjoy the summer!

3 Cool Summer Foods To Hydrate Your Body

Summer is fun, hot and demanding on our bodies. It's easy to get dehydrated when we stay out in the heat. We are supposed to drink plenty of water during the day, but did you know you can keep your body hydrated with food too?

Rejuvenate your immune system and stay hydrated with these 3 cool summertime foods:
1. Watermelon
Chock full of vitamins C, A, and B6 and potassium and magnesium, this watery fruit helps keep the water in your cells where it belongs. Ways to eat watermelon are in slices and chunks. If you cut a watermelon in chunks and store in a covered dish in the refrigerator, it will be easier to grab and eat when you are hungry. Another delicious way is to drink your watermelon. Make watermelon juice by putting slices in the blender with a few ice cubes.

2. Cucumber
Have you ever heard the phrase "cool as a cucumber"? Cucumbers are loaded with vitamin C, molybdenum, and vitamin A. The skin of the cucumber has silica which nourishes your skin and connective tissue. It is rich in potassium and magnesium which is essential for keeping hydrated. Add cucumber slices to salads or make a cold soup like Gazpacho. Just puree the cucumber with tomatoes, green peppers and onions. Add salt and pepper to taste.

3. Summer squash
Zucchini or yellow squash are prolific in summer gardens. They are full of manganese, vitamin C, magnesium, potassium and vitamin A. So both kinds of summer squash are a great vegetable to keep you hydrated. Grate the squash over salads or add to sandwiches. Serve with your favorite dips instead of chips. You can also shred zucchini to add to bread or muffin recipes.

It's easy to add these 3 foods into your summer fun. Cold soups and salads help you to stay cool, keep you away from the stove, and take minimal time to prepare. Don't forget the watermelon juice! It's better for the kids than sweet drinks and sodas which cause dehydration.

Excellent Benefits Of Fruit And Vegetable Juices During Summer

You can refresh yourself in summer with the help of fruit or vegetable juices. These delicious, healthy juices can refresh you and replenish your depleted energy levels. Even though juices can be enjoyed any time of the year, they become much more enjoyable during summers.

You can prepare tasty health drinks at home which can provide you with important nutrients like proteins and vitamins and also help in overcoming the effects of the scorching summer heat. As you might be aware, fruits are very important for our body as well as for a healthy skin.
Fruits and vegetables consist mainly of water and fiber, but they also provide a lot of other important nutrients like minerals, vitamins, phyto-nutrients. It is a very healthy habit to consume fresh fruits and vegetables on regular basis, specially in summer season.

The problem is most people do not like to consume whole fruits or vegetables. Such people can enjoy juices made from them. For example, no one would like to eat 10 carrots at once. But if you make a glass of carrot juice using those 10 carrots, you can easily gulp it down.
Fruits and vegetables provide nutrients which are essential for the growth and healthy functioning of the body. They provide us energy and help in regulating our metabolism. They contain minerals which are necessary for the nerves and muscles of our body. However, keep in mind that vegetable or fruit juices should not be used as substitutes for whole foods, but as supplements. They can be a perfect food supplement, specially for our eat-on-the-run lifestyles. You can make a glass of juice easily and quickly.

Vitamin C present in some juices can be good for the skin. If you regularly drink juices which are rich in Vitamin C, you can notice a significant improvement in the smoothness and beauty of your skin. Vitamin C also helps in joint flexibility and is good for the hair. Grapefruit juice is a good source of Vitamin C and can be helpful in preventing arthritis, cataracts. But people with type 2 diabetes should avoid it due to its high sugar concentration. Orange juice is another good source of Vitamin C.
Carrot juice contains a large amount of beta-carotene, potassium and vitamins. It helps in strengthening the immune system, improving the eyesight and preventing heart related diseases. It can also be helpful in reducing cholesterol levels, healing of wounds and preventing cancer.

Sugarcane juice is very popular during summer season because it quenches our thirst and re-hydrates our body, giving us instant burst of energy. It is also effective in fighting against prostate and breast cancer.

Tips For Natural Weight Loss This Summer

Are you a summer weight loss fanatic? Summer weight loss normally springs to mind when the sun begins to shine and everyone seems to be wearing shorts. If you leave it this late to get organized you won't have time for healthy natural weight loss and you're going to struggle to lose those unwanted pounds.

Natural weight loss must be planned so you can enjoy this summer and show off your lean toned body on the beach without having to starve yourself to get there. Summer weight loss can be simplified by making slight alterations to your daily eating habits and daily exercise routine.
If you spend time planning for your summer weight loss in the same way as you plan your summer holiday then you should have no trouble in losing weight.
Let's face it. You didn't gain your weight in a few days and it's going to take time and commitment to lose it. So you must begin your natural weight loss diet about two months before you intend to wear your shorts or bikini.

Natural weight loss means burning up more calories than you're eating and starving yourself is not the answer.
It's a good idea to work out a rough plan so you can pace yourself. You need to know how many weeks you have for your summer weight loss diet and how much weight you hope to lose.
You must build your summer weight loss diet around healthy food; you need to give your body the greatest nutrition benefits in the least amount of calories. This doesn't mean you have to go on a starvation diet it means you cut out all the useless foods and unwanted fats.
Your daily allowance of food must then be split into five or six small meals at three to four hour intervals to allow natural weight loss to take effect.
The reason for this is because every time you eat your body burns up calories to digest the food. By eating six times a day you are forcing your body to burn calories six times a day instead of just 3 times if you just eat three meals a day.

Eating more often for natural weight loss may seem strange to you but this method really does work.
So your daily food routine should look something like this: breakfast, mid morning break, lunch, afternoon tea, evening meal and supper.
For natural weight loss eat a selection of fresh fruit and vegetables, slow release carbohydrates such as cereals, whole grains, whole grain bread, pasta, brown rice and good quality protein such as lean chicken breast, lean ham, oily fish and low fat dairy products.
You summer weight loss diet is not going to work on its own, you need to find some physical activity you enjoy doing like walking the dog, weight training, vigorous housework, going out for a bicycle ride or even horse riding.

The secret to burning up calories for natural weight loss is to increase your heart rate for at least fifteen minutes to burn calories every day. It will also help to increase your muscle mass and make you look more toned. Because muscle burns fat even when you're resting once you get into this new routine your summer weight loss will become more effortless as time goes by.
All you efforts will pay off when you reach your summer weight loss target and you're wearing your shorts with pride and showing off your lean toned legs.

Raw Banana Avocado Ice Cream

Many health conscious people are trying to incorporate more raw foods into their diets. They do this for many different reasons, including the preservation of enzymes and important nutrients. Most health care professionals agree that people need more fruits and vegetables in their daily diets, and eating them raw is a natural choice.
I try to eat foods that will contribute to good health. However, I will not give up flavor in my quest for healthy foods. Years ago I stumbled upon a single ingredient recipe for a banana ice cream substitute. It involved simply freezing a banana and puréeing it in the food processor. The author of the recipe promised it would taste like soft serve banana ice cream. It didn't.
Photo: Divinehealthyfood.com
The resulting concoction had a watery taste that didn't mimic ice cream in any real way. It was similar to the taste of a banana popsicle, but had no creaminess to it. It wasn't bad; it just wasn't what was promised.
I began to wonder how I could keep this recipe as healthy as it was while making it taste a bit more like ice cream. I tried adding almond milk, coconut cream and a few other creamy products. Nothing gave it the right texture and taste. That is until I added an avocado. I know it sounds weird, but avocados are loaded with good monounsaturated fatty acids. These good fats combine with the banana to create a creamy, tasty treat your taste buds won't believe. Top it with chopped nuts for an even more satisfying snack.
Photo: Divinehealthyfood.com

This is what you will need for four servings:
4 very ripe bananas
1 ripe hass avocado
2 teaspoons freshly ground cinnamon or nutmeg (optional)
Directions:
Cut the bananas into one inch slices. Put into a sealable bag and freeze for at least twelve hours. Transfer the bananas to the food processor work bowl, fitted with a multi-purpose blade. Let sit at room temperature for five minutes to slightly thaw. Process until smooth. Add the avocado and spices (if desired) and continue to process till well combined. At this point it will be the consistency of soft serve ice cream and can be served as is. If you want a firmer texture, return it to the freezer for 30 minutes. Do not allow to completely freeze or it will become too hard.

5 Ways To Make Healthy Eating More Interesting

Eating healthy sometimes seems boring. As a culture, we've become inclined to associate good food with foods and dishes that are not always the best choices. Meals that contain oils, cheese, refined sugars and even trans fats have seeped into our daily diets. These high caloric and high sugar foods have us coming back for more but these choices are not the best for our health.

Good news is on the way! Eating healthy doesn't have to be boring. Fresh fruits, vegetables, lean protein, healthy fats, nuts and spices are great ways to make meals interesting and tasty. Follow these easy tips to spice up your food for healthy eating that's good for you and satisfying to the taste buds.
1. Use spices. Use spices for every meal. Yes, that even means you can spice up your breakfast! For breakfast, eggs cooked in olive oil and spiced with rosemary and garlic add a whole new flavor and sophistication to an early morning meal. Lunch salads can be freshened up with lemon juice and sea salt mixed with a bit of cilantro as a low cal dressing. Fish or chicken at dinner can be marinated in fresh juices and garlic to add flavor.

2. Add color. Use as many colors in your meals as possible. This means adding vegetables and fruits of all different colors. Try to incorporate at least 4 different colors at each meal. Blueberries and strawberries, bell peppers, tomatoes, eggplant and yellow squash are just a few colorful ingredients that can help make your food tasty. In addition, the colors are eye catching which will make any dish more appealing.
3. Fatten up your food. Using healthy fats will add flavor to food. Fats such as olive oil, coconut oil, avocado and nuts add depth to the flavor of food providing a richer taste in a dish. In addition, the role of fat is to slow the absorption of sugar into the blood stream and signal the brain that you are full. So not only will you benefit from a taste enhancer, but you'll also be doing yourself a favor nutritionally.

4. Serve it sassy. Dress up your food! Use garnishes such as parsley on the side of the plate, a piece of bibb lettuce under a fresh piece of fish or fresh fruit on top of your protein as a flavor enhancer and pretty finisher. At most restaurants, your food comes out on the plate looking beautiful. There may be a subtle or sophisticated plated presentation. Making your plate pretty can help make your meal seem more enticing.

5. Try something new. We tend to get into the habit of eating the same foods over and over again. The biggest reason for this is because we know we like these foods so they are our "go to" foods. Trying new things can help keep your healthy meals new and exciting. Try a new piece of fish for dinner such as sea bass, halibut or pick the freshest piece of fish at your local grocery store that you haven't tried before. Cook your vegetables in a different way. Summer time is the perfect time to grill vegetables instead of roasting or baking them. Add in one new vegetable or fruit to mix things up. Try a new recipe to give you inspiration. Whatever the "new" component is, keeping your meals interesting will help make eating healthy fun and keep you focused on healthy choices.
